Writing a resume for business & finance roles
Business and finance resumes are judged on numbers and credibility. Whether the role is accounting, analysis, or operations, the hiring screen looks for quantified ownership: budgets closed, processes fixed, risks caught, dollars saved or earned. A bullet without a number is a missed opportunity in this field.
Credentials carry real weight — CPA, CFA, PRINCE2, PMP — and belong in a dedicated section with the exact awarding body and year. Recruiters screen on the precise credential, so partial achievements should be phrased precisely rather than left ambiguous.
The format expectations are conservative: single-column, text-first documents with standard headings. Finance and consulting employers favour restraint; a resume that looks like a designed artefact raises more doubts than it answers. Dense, well-ordered bullets are the house style.
Each example below includes a full sample resume, a section-by-section guide, and — where O*NET ratings exist — skills phrasing that shows how the top-rated competencies actually appear in finance hiring. the field's hiring funnel is unusually keyword-literal: large employers filter on exact system names and credential strings before a human reads anything. That makes the skills section functional rather than decorative. Build it from the job posting, not from your self-image: if the posting says 'month-end close', your resume says 'month-end close', and if it says 'GL', write the platform name once in full so both the filter and the reader are satisfied.
Finally, remember that credibility compounds across the document: a resume that states a CPA status precisely, quantifies the close honestly, and names systems correctly signals a candidate whose numbers can be trusted. Every field you leave vague is a question the screener answers pessimistically, so resolve them one by one before you submit.
