Writing a resume for data & analytics roles

Data and analytics resumes live or die on the decision metric. The size of the dataset is not an achievement; the decision it enabled is. Every bullet should name a business question, the analysis that answered it, and what changed as a result — hours saved, revenue protected, spend reallocated.

The skills section needs three layers: query and storage (SQL, warehouses), analysis and BI (Power BI, Tableau, Python or R), and the domain — marketing, finance, operations. Domain context is what separates an analyst from a report builder, and it is the layer most resumes omit.

O*NET's ratings for analytics occupations are a useful corrective to the stereotype: reading comprehension, writing, and speaking rank with or above mathematics. Analysis only counts when it reaches a decision-maker — so evidence your communication as seriously as your stack.

Each example below includes a full sample resume, a section-by-section guide, and data-backed skills phrasing. the most common seniority mistake in this field is describing tooling instead of judgement. Junior analysts list technologies; senior analysts describe decisions their analysis enabled and the uncertainty they managed. When you write your bullets, include at least one line about a data quality problem you caught or a recommendation you made against the obvious reading — that is the difference the hiring panel is looking for.

Finally, note that the strongest analytics resumes are short. The field rewards compression — a dashboard that answers the question in one view, an analysis that ends in a recommendation. Apply the same standard to the document: if a bullet does not end in a decision, a saving, or a tool you would defend in an interview, it is a line the screener skips.
