Writing a resume for government & public sector roles
Public sector resumes are assessed against published frameworks, not vibes. In the Australian Public Service that means the Integrated Leadership System and work-level capabilities; in the UK Civil Service it means the Success Profiles Behaviours. Your resume supports the assessment: factual, complete, with month-level dates and no employment gaps left unexplained.
Applications usually pair the resume with a pitch or personal statement, and panels cross-check the two for consistency. Mirror the capability and behaviour language from the listing verbatim, and write achievements in STAR form — Situation, Task, Action, Result — so the evidence is easy to score.
Format expectations are conventional: standard headings, plain text, complete history. Where blind recruitment applies, remove personal identifiers. Length runs longer than private-sector norms — two to three pages is normal and accepted.
Each example below includes a full sample resume, a guide to capability-based bullet points, and notes on the application process for the relevant service. merit processes are auditable: panel scores and evidence must map to the published framework, which is why generic achievement language scores poorly even when the underlying work is strong. Read the work-level capability descriptions for your target classification before you write, then write bullets that a panel could quote in a scoring document. If a capability does not apply to your history, leave it out rather than dilute the evidence.
Finally, keep a master record of your employment history with exact dates, classifications, and supervisor roles, because merit processes run for months and a panel may request clarification on any line. The resume you write now should be rebuildable from records, not memory — that discipline is also, not coincidentally, what the work rewards.
