Writing a resume for technology roles
Technology resumes succeed on evidence: what you shipped, what it was built with, and what measurably changed. Hiring managers in technical roles read hundreds of documents and are trained to skim for signals — a specialisation named in the first two lines, a skills section that mirrors the job posting's wording, and achievements with numbers attached.
The common failure mode is the inventory resume: a long list of every technology touched and every responsibility held, with no outcomes. Recruiters screen for alignment with the role's requirements, not breadth. Three or four achievement bullets per role, each following an action-metric pattern, outperforms a page of duties.
Technical resumes also carry more keyword-matching pressure than most fields, because applicant tracking systems filter on literal strings before a human reads anything. Spell out terms at first use, match the posting's vocabulary, and keep the layout single-column so parsers capture everything.
Each example below includes a full sample resume, a section-by-section writing guide, and data-backed skills phrasing where O*NET ratings are available, so you can adapt the structure to your own experience rather than copy a template blind. salaries in technology respond sharply to seniority signals, and the resume is where those signals are read first. Before writing a word, decide what level you are evidencing: a mid-level resume that reads like a senior one sets up the wrong interview; a senior resume that hides leadership behind feature lists undersells it. Name your level of ownership explicitly — maintained, led, designed, or owned — and keep it consistent between the summary and the bullets so the screen adds up.
Finally, treat the sample resumes here as calibration, not copying: each one shows a specific level, stack, and market, and the fastest way to a weak resume is to blend three people's structures into one document. Read the example closest to your level, note which of its sections carry numbers, and rebuild your own around the same discipline.
