Writing a resume for marketing & creative roles
Marketing and creative resumes must do two jobs at once: prove commercial outcomes and demonstrate craft. Campaign bullets should carry funnel metrics — acquisition cost, conversion, return on ad spend, organic growth — while the document itself shows the typographic care the field expects. Restraint wins: one clean column parses better and reads more senior than a designed artefact.
Portfolio links are part of the contact block in creative roles. For marketers, name the platforms literally — Google Ads, Meta, HubSpot, GA4 — because keyword filters match exact strings. For designers, software names do the same work: the Adobe suite, Figma, After Effects.
The O*NET data for both fields is clear about what employers weight: listening, speaking, critical thinking, and social perceptiveness. Tools change yearly; the durable skills are client-reading and judgement. The strongest resumes evidence those with concrete client stories, not adjectives.
Each example below includes a full sample resume, a section-by-section guide, and skills phrasing where O*NET data is available. treat the resume as evidence of the taste the role requires. A marketing manager's document should read like a well-built campaign page — clear hierarchy, one idea per section, metrics where a claim would be. A designer's should show restraint. In both cases, the piece that gets candidates rejected is not lack of skill but overselling: every adjective removed makes the numbers louder.
Finally, keep the resume and the portfolio in a deliberate division of labour: the resume proves outcomes and scale, the portfolio proves craft and process. Candidates who blur the two — cramming case studies into the resume or metrics into the portfolio's hero image — weaken both. Let each asset do its own job, and link them cleanly.
